Simple machines are tools with few or no moving parts that make work easier. There are six types of simple machines: lever, inclined plane, wedge, screw, wheel and axle, and pulley.

Also, simple machines are the building blocks of a bunch of other tools, they can also be combined to form compound machines, which are tools made up of two or more simple machines working together.

I love starting a lesson on simple machines of brainstorming in a class with all of the examples of simple machines they can think of. We’re surrounded by simple machines! And imagine if we didn’t have them? It’s easy to see how they make work easier.

Now, let’s get into simple machines!

What is work?

When referring to work in physics, it’s different than your typical definition of “work.”

Work is defined as an amount of force (or effort) to move an object a distance. The equation is simple:

W = Fd

These simple machine projects show how the machine makes the work easier. Just think of all the examples of simple machines we talked about earlier! How difficult would it be to pull an elevator to the top of a building? It would be impossible for us to do it on our own.

But with pulleys, it’s possible and makes the work easier.

When moving heavy objects, simple machines like pulleys reduce the effort needed to move that heavy object. The simple machines we use everyday provide a mechanical advantage.

Use these STEM project ideas as creative (and crafty) demonstrations of simple machines! They can be done in groups, or the teacher can use them as a demonstration for the class.

They make a great activity at home too, for your future engineers who love building!

6 Fun Simple Machine Projects

We’ve outlined here an example project for every type of simple machine:

2. Marble Run Inclined Plane

Why just make an inclined plane when you can make a racecourse? You can use marbles or toy cars with this project.

3. Make a Lever with a Binder Clip

I love this simple machine project for demonstrating a lever! While it isn’t necessary to label which side is demonstrating the load and effort, it’s a great way to reinforce the lesson!

4. Splitting Play Dough with a Wedge

The easiest (and most common example) of a wedge is an ax. Since you don’t want kids playing with axes, you can still demonstrate how a wedge works with play dough!

Use triangular wedge blocks. You can make miniature “logs” with the play dough. Have the kids try to cut the play dough with just the flat part of their hand. It doesn’t work. Now, try cutting it with your wedge and see what happens!

5. Demonstrating Screws

The best way to demonstrate how a screw makes work easier is to take a simple piece of wood. First, try pushing a nail in with your hand – you can’t. Next, show how you can screw in a screw. It may be one that you want to demonstrate!

6. Wheel and Axle Recycled Cars

This one is by far my favorite! When you think of a wheel and axle, the first thing that comes to mind is a car.

Start with just your tube. When you try to push it across the floor, you can do much. Now imagine if you tried to fill it with weights. It would be so much easier if it had wheels!

Use straws or chopsticks as the axle. Plastic bottle caps make great wheels. You can decorate your cars however you want! And don’t feel limited to just cardboard rolls. Plastic bottles work great too – let kids design their very own recycled car.

Common Misconceptions About Simple Machines

Even though simple machines are, well, simple, there are a few misconceptions that can trip us up. Let’s clear those up so we have a solid 绿帽子精选系列70!

One common misconception is that all levers work the same way. They don’t.

In reality, levers are categorized into three classes, depending on where the effort, load, and fulcrum are located. For example something we see on playgrounds, a seesaw is a first-class lever, while a wheelbarrow is a second-class lever, and a pair of tongs is a third-class lever.

Knowing these differences helps kids better understand how levers can be used in different situations.

Everyone in your home is busy with their chores or with work for jobs and school. Did anyone remember to shop and plan for dinner? At a rushed family meeting in the kitchen, parents and kids agree they’re all getting hungry. What’s available in the fridge, freezer, or pantry? Step 2: Imagine

After looking over the foods that are handy, your family of six brainstorms what they could prepare that wouldn’t require a long cooking time. Roasted meat? Takes too long, and the oven heats up the house on an already warm day.

Grandma and Grandpa gave you all those vegetables from their garden. You really should eat those soon, so they don’t go to waste. What about vegetable stew? We need to add something like a protein. Let’s research on the internet to see what we could add to protein power.

Step 3: Plan

Your family jots down a list of agreed vegetables to use as ingredients:   potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, turnips, green beans, beets, and peas. You also list dried kidney beans, tofu, or eggs for the protein options.

But the family can’t agree on just one form of protein since everyone likes different things. Let’s make three separate pans of stew, you suggest.

Step 4: Create

The kids shell the peas, snap the ends off the green beans, and cut the softer foods requiring only a table knife. Parents cut the denser vegetables with the sharper knives. The family divides into three teams, with each one taking responsibility for one pan of soup.

Teams add water to each pot, along with dried herb and spice selections. Vegetables and proteins are chosen by each group, with the eggs waiting until later in the cooking process to be added by that team.

Step 5: Improve

As the delicious cooking aromas fill the air, two teams notice issues. The tofu cubes are beginning to look mushy and break apart. In addition, the red beets in another pan are turning the potatoes, turnips, and broth pink! Adjustments are needed.

The beets are removed before any more color escapes and set in a bowl to be used another day. Carrots replace the chunks of beet. A team member fishes tofu from another pot with a slotted spoon, and a parent stir-fries new cubes of that protein source to a golden brown, before adding them later into the soup pan.

Also, having waited nearer to the end of the process, a team breaks six eggs into its pot and watches how they quickly turn white and hide the yolks within.

Taste testers from each group sample a spoonful to determine if their stew is ready. Kidney beans are still too firm, so that pot needs more time. The other teams turn their burners off and leave the pans covered. Finally, the third soup is also ready!

What are Acids and Bases?

Although “acid” might sound like something dangerous and “base” could remind you of a ball field, acids and bases are common substances found right around your house!

Juices like orange, lemons, and tomato are acids, for instance. They often taste a bit sour because they’re an acidic solution.

Baking soda, soaps, and chalk (that can mark the bases on a ball field) are all considered basic solutions. When mixed with water, they feel slimy or slippery. Certain acids and bases are, in fact, dangerous. Battery acid can eat right through the fabric. Ammonia is a base that can be harmful to smell closely, especially for people with asthma.

What’s the Difference Between Acids and Bases?

All these substances have ions. Ions are tiny molecules or atoms of distinct types.

Acids tend to have many hydrogen ions, giving a tangy taste to foods.

On the other hand, bases hold many hydroxide ions, which can taste bitter in things that are edible. Acids and bases appear in nature and right in our bodies. Our stomachs use a balance of acid to help digest food, and the various parts of plants may be acids or bases with different properties.

How Can We Measure Acidity or Baseness?

Look at the picture, above, of the pH scale, which we use to graphically compare acidity and baseness. The part of the scale from zero up to 7 stands for acids, 7 is neutral, and everything above 7 stands for bases.

How can we measure substances to decide where they fall on the pH scale? Certain things we can taste, to help make a good guess where they might fall on the scale. Other substances we can’t sample in that way.

Instead, we need to use something called an indicator solution. Indicators are materials from nature that turn a certain color to show acidity or baseness. For example, purple litmus paper is made from special plants and will turn red when it 张开腿我的舌头满足你s acids and turns blue when it touches bases.

6 Fun Projects to Teach Kids About Acids & Bases

1. Red Cabbage as an Indicator

You can make something like litmus paper at home with red cabbage and use it to test different acids and bases. This is a great way for kids to explore how an indicator solution works in practice.

Slice and cook the cabbage on top of the stove in simmering water. After it’s cooled, strain and keep the colored juice. You can also save the cabbage and add it to your favorite stew for dinner.

Dip several white index cards into the cooled cabbage juice and let them dry. After they’re dry you can cut into strips to test various substances. Dip them in things like pickle juice and milk, guessing ahead of time whether they will turn the paper red for acid or blue for a base.

Pour the cabbage juice into several clear glasses. Add various liquids to see what color the juice will become. You might try cola in one and baking soda in another to see what color the water will magically turn. Keep track of your results.

2. Edible Chemical Reaction

When acids and bases meet, you might see interesting acid base reactions. Some of these combinations aren’t safe to eat. However, here’s a combination that’s edible and tasty…

That frozen treat called “sherbet” contains both an acid and a base. Try making your own version and see if you can feel the reaction in your mouth!

In a dry bowl or in a sealable sandwich bag combine the following ingredients:

• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon citric acid crystals (from supplement/vitamin stores)
• 1/2 teaspoon sweetened drink crystals (like Kool-Ade)
• ·1 teaspoon powdered sugar

Stir, if using the bowl, or seal and shake if using a bag. After it’s smooth, try eating a little at a time. What happens in your mouth? Discuss which of the ingredients you think are bases and which are acids.

3. Clean Those Pennies

Find several tarnished, dirty-looking pennies. In three or four clear glasses make solutions, or mixtures, combining water with acids and with bases, such as lemon juice, cola, baking soda, or soap. These acid base reactions create observable differences because acids and bases have different properties that affect how they interact with metals like copper.

Which mixtures do you predict will clean and shine the pennies the best, when the coins remain in the water for a while? Write down your predictions and compare them to your results.

 4. Make an Egg Shell Disappear

Carefully lower a raw egg into a bowl or glass of white vinegar. The acid in the vinegar is an acidic solution that dissolves the calcium carbonate shell.

After about 24 hours, you should find that the acid in the vinegar dissolves the shell (calcium carbonate). You’ve now made your very own “rubber egg!”

(NOTE: You wouldn’t want to eat this because of possible bacteria still contained in the egg.)

5. Combining Acids and Bases

What do you think will happen when acids and bases are combined? You might find they can neutralize each other or move closer to the neutral range on the pH scale. This experiment shows how pH levels shift during acid base reactions.

Test this by placing spooned baking soda into a glass of vinegar. Then test the solution with litmus paper or with your homemade paper from the cabbage experiment.

What Is Light?

Light is energy that travels through space. It’s how we see the world around us. Light comes from many places and has some cool features we’ll talk about!

Nature of Light

Light is a type of electromagnetic radiation. It moves in waves, and tiny particles called photons at the same time.

Light zips through space at super high speeds. It takes about 8 minutes for sunlight to reach Earth from the Sun.

A red apple looks red because it reflects red light and absorbs other colors. We see it as red from the light bouncing off the surface of the apple, to our eyes.

Light Sources

Light comes from natural and artificial sources. The biggest natural light source is our Sun. Other stars also make light.

People make artificial light sources. Light bulbs are the most common or the screen you’re using to read this right now.

Candles, flashlights, and glow sticks also create light. Some animals, like fireflies, can make their own light through a process called bioluminescence.

Visible Light and the Human Eye

The light we can see is called visible light. It’s just a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light includes all the colors of the rainbow.

Our eyes are designed to detect visible light. Ultraviolet light is also around us but we can’t pick it up with our eyes. When light enters our eyes, special cells turn it into signals. Our brain then turns these signals into the images we see.

Different animals can see different types of light. Some can see ultraviolet light that humans can’t detect. Others, like snakes, can sense infrared light to find warm-blooded prey.
